Chalmers University of Technology
ATMP development requires expertise in biology, engineering, manufacturing and clinical science. Chalmers research is relevant through technologies and methods for delivery, bioanalytics, materials, production and data analysis.
Drug delivery and biomaterials
Researchers at Chalmers study lipid nanoparticles, extracellular vesicles, other carriers for RNA and DNA, as well as structural characterization of oligonucleotides. The work covers formulation, particle structure, cargo structure, cellular uptake, intracellular transport and release. Related research in biomaterials, biointerfaces, bioelectricity, hydrogels, scaffolds and three-dimensional bioprinting examines how cells interact with materials. These areas are relevant to nucleotide-based therapies, cell delivery, regenerative medicine and tissue-engineered products.
Bioprocessing and data analysis
Chalmers has expertise in bioreactors, biological production systems, metabolic engineering and process modelling. This expertise is relevant to process control, scale-up and quality in the manufacture of complex biological products. Researchers also use mathematical modelling, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence to analyse biological data, characterise cells and predict molecular and process behaviour.
Collaboration and infrastructure
Research is conducted with academic, healthcare and industrial partners. The FormulaEx industrial research centre, with partners including AstraZeneca, developed methods and technologies for nucleotide-based therapeutics. This work is being developed further through the Precision HealthTech Hub within Chalmers Next Labs. The hub focuses on drug-delivery technologies, nanoparticle characterisation and bioanalytical testing. It is being established at GoCo Health Innovation City, alongside the SciLifeLab OligoNova Hub.
Education and innovation
Chalmers offers relevant programmes and courses in biotechnology, tissue engineering, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, mathematical modelling, data science and artificial intelligence. ATMP can be included through student projects, seminars, collaborative courses and activities with healthcare and industry. Chalmers’ innovation system also provides support for verification, intellectual property, business development and commercialisation.
Research and innovation network
The research and innovation network brings together researchers, healthcare professionals, technology specialists, entrepreneurs and companies. Chalmers contributes technical expertise, research infrastructure and experience of industrial collaboration.
Through Chalmers Next Labs and the Precision HealthTech Hub, partners can access test environments and expertise in drug-delivery systems, nanoparticle analysis, bioanalytics and biological testing. These resources can be used to evaluate and develop ATMP-related technologies.
