Purpose and Long-Term Vision: Collaboratively Building a Strong Nordic ATMP Ecosystem
The goal is to, starting from Western Sweden, strengthening Sweden as a leading hub within ATMP and assuring sustainable workforce development starting from students all the way to professional experts.
The initiative aligns with the national life science strategy, which emphasizes the importance of developing necessary skills to strengthen and maintain Sweden’s position as a leading life science nation. This strategic initiative brings together healthcare, academia, and industry to promote collaboration and accelerate skills development.
By strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the right expertise, the conditions for success in a rapidly growing and internationally competitive field are created. By also bringing together different sectors, SCALE aims to spread knowledge about product development, minimize risk-taking without a solid knowledge base, and increase entrepreneurship and new collaborations, ultimately bringing more products to market.
Initiative overview
ATMP Workforce Development in the Gothenburg area is an initiative consisting of two projects. The earlier project, focusing on the healthcare sector and supported by the European Social Fund, has achieved strong results, with over 700 people receiving targeted ATMP education in their healthcare roles. The materials developed are now part of SCALE and will continue to educate healthcare personnel and a broader range of target groups.
SCALE, funded by VGR and the European Regional Development Fund (through Tillväxtverket), runs until 2028 and aims to ensure a sustainable way forward for continued education even after the project end. Together, these projects represent a major investment in workforce development in the field.
High-level goals & timeline
SCALE works in parallel to ensure high-quality training for anyone interested, as well as creating meeting points and events where people and science can come together. Please contact the project team if you have a knowledge gap you want to address, or an idea for an event that would fit this community.
SCALE amongst other initiatives
As a result of a series of initiatives and increased focus on the ATMP field in Sweden, SCALE is one of the outcomes of projects that have led to both new companies and further national initiatives.
The long-term ambition is for SCALE to become Sweden’s leading cluster for ATMP knowledge and competence development. SCALE seeks collaboration and dialogue to ensure national alignment and effective use of resources with other initiatives.
To ensure quality of training and support alignment and structure beyond national borders, SCALE also collaborates with international initiatives and companies.
Project Overview Work Packages
-
Work Package 1. Project Management
SCALE is a collaborative project involving six organizations that together represent industry, academia, and healthcare. Sahlgrenska Science Park serves as the project owner, while CCRM Nordic acts as the operational project manager. With representatives from each partner organization participating in the project group, together with a strong steering committee, the project is well positioned to achieve its goals. The project is externally reviewed by SWECO.
-
Work Package 2. Communication
This work package includes both communication about the project and the development of communication strategies and objectives to ensure that the digital platform is accessible, well-functioning, and widely used by all target groups. Please find summery of communication strategy under resources.

Work Package 3. Collaboration and Training Center
SCALE focuses on training, skills development, and collaboration. This will be achieved through our digital center, this website. Here, we are building a communication infrastructure across sectors within Region Västra Götaland. We also aim to collect existing knowledge, make it accessible, and address gaps where structured training opportunities are currently limited.
-
Work Package 4. SME Focus
SCALE’s main target group for upskilling and training is SMEs within the region. We aim to maintain close dialogue with and between SMEs and to support them in strengthening their knowledge in areas relevant to their needs, enabling them to grow and develop further.
