The Healthcare sector
The healthcare sector in Västra Götaland combines patient care, research, and education to support the development and implementation of innovative healthcare solutions. Through strong collaboration across the region, healthcare providers contribute to advancing new treatment approaches and improving patient outcomes, with Sahlgrenska University Hospital serving as a leading centre for specialized care and clinical research. Together, these efforts support the development and implementation of innovative therapies, including ATMPs
Sahlgrenska University Hospital
Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the largest and most advanced hospitals in Northern Europe, located in Gothenburg, Sweden. It provides highly specialized care, conducts leading-edge research, and plays a central role in medical education in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. The hospital is known for its strong focus on innovation and the development of advanced therapies, with a clear ambition to remain a leading European centre for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs). This legacy dates back to 1987, when the world’s first clinical transplantations of cultured chondrocytes were performed in Gothenburg, laying important foundations for today’s cell and gene therapies.
Building on this history, advanced therapies are a strategic priority for the hospital’s long-term development. ATMPs are viewed as central to transforming care for patients with severe and previously untreatable diseases. Through strategic investments in competence, infrastructure and collaboration, including partnerships with the Sahlgrenska Academy, CCRM Nordic, and regional and academic stakeholders, Sahlgrenska aims to translate scientific breakthroughs into safe, effective and sustainable ATMP treatments for patients – today and in the decades to come.
ATMP Centre
The Sahlgrenska ATMP Centre is the hospital’s hub for the use of advanced therapies involving cells, genes, or tissues. The centre collaborate with academia, industry, and healthcare providers to enable clinical trials and the introduction of new ATMP treatments.
The Sahlgrenska ATMP Centre brings together expertise and resources to address questions and processes related to ATMP – always with the patient’s needs at the core. It support researchers, healthcare professionals, and companies in navigating this complex field – from idea to patient.
Since 2024, the centre also includes the Nordic region’s first cell and gene therapy unit for children, located at Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital – a unique initiative to provide children and young people access to the treatments of the future.
Cell and Tissue Laboratory (CoV) & Stem Cell Laboratory
At Sahlgrenska University Hospital, the Cell and Tissue Laboratory (CoV) and the Stem Cell Laboratory are key enablers of advanced therapies and clinical translation. CoV uniquely combines ATMP manufacturing with a licensed tissue establishment and multi-tissue bank, ensuring safe, high-quality processing of cells and tissues for clinical use. The Stem Cell Laboratory provides specialised expertise in stem cell processing and development, supporting both clinical applications and advanced research. Together, the laboratories strengthen Sahlgrenska’s capacity to support clinical trials, introduce novel ATMPs into healthcare, and deliver cutting-edge treatments to patients.
Precision Medicine
The Centre for Precision Medicine serves as a coordinating unit to promote the development of precision medicine within Sahlgrenska University Hospital, but also through national collaboration. Precision medicine represents one of the major opportunities and challenges for healthcare going forward, enabling the provision of individualized, tailor-made treatments for patients.
